The Alcorn School District has officially expanded its fleet with the arrival of three brand-new, top-of-the-line school buses. These buses, which were approved for purchase in the fall of 2023, have just been delivered due to the necessary manufacturing lead time. Their addition marks another step in the district’s ongoing commitment to providing safe, reliable, and efficient transportation for students.
Each of these new buses is diesel-fueled and capable of traveling approximately 750 miles on a single tank of fuel. This impressive range is essential, considering that Alcorn School District buses collectively cover around 670,000 miles per school year. With 55 daily routes, including specialized routes for students with special needs, as well as year-round travel for academics, athletics, extracurriculars, and field trips, it is critical that the district maintains a modern and dependable fleet.
These buses are designed with safety as the top priority, featuring dual emergency exit hatches on the roof to provide additional evacuation routes in the event of an emergency. The heated mirrors ensure drivers have a clear view in all weather conditions, while cruise control helps maintain safe and consistent speeds during long routes. The buses are also equipped with a lockable electric service door for added security and back-up cameras to assist drivers when maneuvering in tight spaces or high-traffic areas.
In addition to safety improvements, these buses include several features that enhance comfort and convenience for both drivers and passengers. The bus cabins have been designed with additional headspace, creating a more spacious and comfortable environment. The hydraulic driver’s seat provides much-needed ergonomic support, reducing strain during long hours on the road. Heating and air conditioning systems ensure that passengers remain comfortable throughout the year, regardless of the season. Each bus is also equipped with a radio and public address system, allowing drivers to make important announcements when necessary. Furthermore, under-bus storage bays offer extra space for luggage and equipment during extended travel, making these buses ideal for field trips and extracurricular events.
Before these buses officially join the district’s active fleet, additional safety enhancements will be made. Security cameras will be installed to monitor onboard activity, and each bus will be equipped with a 911 radio system to ensure instant communication in the event of an emergency. These upgrades will further support the district’s ongoing efforts to provide the highest level of safety for students and staff.
The purchase of these new buses is part of a long-term initiative to modernize the Alcorn School District’s transportation system. As part of this commitment, the district plans to continue adding three new buses each year to ensure the fleet remains updated and in top condition. Both ASD Superintendent Brandon Quinn and Transportation Director Randy Holt expressed excitement about the district’s investment in transportation, emphasizing that student safety remains the highest priority.
