The Alcorn School District (ASD) Honor Choir marked a significant milestone this year as it convened for its 29th annual performance. Hosted at Oakland Baptist Church, the event showcased the incredible talent of students from all campuses in the Alcorn School District. This annual gathering, held during the first weekend in March, serves as a tribute to National Music in Our Schools Month, reinforcing the importance of music education in ASD schools.
Founded in 1996 by Rene Estes and Stephanie Clausel, the ASD Honor Choir was established to foster a deep appreciation for music among students and the broader ASD community. Over nearly three decades, the choir has evolved into a collaborative effort that brings together young vocalists from Alcorn Central, Biggersville, and Kossuth. Students in grades 3-6 audition each spring for the opportunity to participate, and this year, 71 talented singers were selected through this rigorous process.
The Honor Choir follows a dynamic schedule, with students from all ASD campuses meeting for the first time on Friday to rehearse intensively. After another round of practice on Saturday, the students, despite having fewer than 12 hours of total rehearsal time, deliver a full-length concert on Sunday afternoon. The following Monday, the choir performs once more, providing an opportunity for their peers across the district to experience the musical showcase firsthand.
Under the expert guidance of ASD Music Directors Tina Down (ACES), Jana Hopson (ACMS), Kristen Cook (BES), and Nancy Harvell (KES), the 2025 Honor Choir delivered an impressive program featuring eight selections, including both vocal and instrumental pieces. The 35-minute performance captivated the audience, blending inspiration with entertainment and highlighting the dedication of ASD’s young musicians.
