Late reminder that staff and students are encouraged to wear Blue tomorrow for Autism Awareness month! WE ARE AC!
In a heartwarming scene that unfolded at Alcorn Central Middle School (ACMS) on Friday, April 5, the DARE graduation ceremony was filled with an emotional depth that went far beyond its usual significance. The auditorium, buzzing with the excited chatter of students and their families, bore witness to a surprise reunion that captured the essence of joy, love, and the sacrifices made by military families. Aubree Counce, a 5th-grade student at ACMS, was among her peers, awaiting the commencement of their DARE graduation, a pivotal moment marking the students’ commitment to stay away from drugs and violence. Unknown to Aubree, the day was set to hold much more than the proud receipt of her DARE certificate. Her father, Staff Sargent Scott Gammill, who had been deployed with the US Army for the past year, had planned a surprise that would transform the day into an unforgettable milestone in their lives. As the ceremony buzzed with anticipation, SSgt. Gammill entered the auditorium, blending into the crowd of proud parents and guardians. He was first spotted speaking with Aubree’s mom and stepdad, Maryanne and Joseph Baggett, a sight that initially went unnoticed by the eagerly waiting students. It wasn’t long, however, before Aubree's eyes caught the familiar figure of her father through the sea of attendees. In a moment charged with disbelief and emotion, Aubree sprinted through the crowd, her eyes locked on her father. Aubree leapt into her father’s arms, wrapping herself around him in an embrace that lasted several minutes and spoke volumes of their bond and the ache of separation they had endured. ACMS Principal Travis Smith took a moment to acknowledge the poignant reunion, announcing it to the assembled crowd. This acknowledgment led to a thunderous round of applause from the 5th-grade students, ACMS staff, and all families in attendance, turning the ceremony into a shared celebration of family and support for military service. ACMS was proud to have witnessed such an amazing reunion between one of our students and her father. We thank SSgt. Gammill for his service to our country and welcome him home to our community. #WeAreAC
