Alcorn Central Football started their long weekend off with a 35-28 win over the Tigers of Middleton last Friday.
The Golden Bears did what they do best: run. Although, Sophomore QB Jacob Leatherwood was able to step back into pocket and rocket two passes for completion into the hands of Charlie Staley and Seth Jones. Of course, Alcorn Central's passing yards couldn't hold a stick to that of the Tigers. Luke Turner, Junior Quarterback for Middleton, completed 16 passes of the attempted 32 for a total of 242 yards.
Although Middleton picked up almost 250 yards in the air, they only had 112 on the ground. That is where AC was able to take control. The Bears came close to tripling the total rushing yards of the Tigers by picking up 301 yards of their own. The biggest difference this week was Jacob Leatherwood. The Bears utilized Leatherwood in several quarterback sneaks, a total of fourteen to be exact. He was averaging around 5.7 yards per carry for a total of 80 yards. Perhaps one of the most notable single play performances came from Sophomore Colt Fields who had one carry in the game that resulted in a 45 yard touchdown. Several other guys made vital efforts to help the Golden Bears make needed advances to keep control of the game. Other guys picking up rushing yards were Staley, Rorie, Jones, and Doran. Total offense for the Golden Bears was 393 yards.
Since Middleton was a primary pass play team, Alcorn Central had to step it up defensively. This week, the Golden Bears made 34 solo tackles and 9 assisted tackles for a total of 43. It was a collective effort by the whole AC defense because 11 guys total got in on the tackle action. The defense was also able to snag an interception for return. Charlie Staley caught the pass intended for the Middleton receiver on the Golden Bear 4 yard-line and ran it all the back to the house for a 96 yard pick six.
The Golden Bears move into the third game of the season with a 2-0 overall record. Friday night, Alcorn Central will host Walnut. The Wildcats are coming off of a big 36-6 win in the Joe Bowl over county rivals Falkner.
Kickoff will be at 7PM @ Golden Bear Field in Glen, MS. The whole game will be broadcast live on ACHS Pawtalk through Mixlr.
