accounting class students do budgeting activity at Walmart

Alcorn Central High School accounting students took a trip to Walmart on Monday, August 12 to complete a budgeting activity.

Coach John Mask took his first block accounting class to Walmart Supercenter in Corinth to complete a project as a part of their "Personal Accounting" unit. Students were paired up in groups and given the task of throwing a tailgate party on a budget.

Mask said, "It is important for students to have a good idea of personal financial management as a prerequisite to the financial accounting terms and standards that we will cover in class. You need to know how to manage your own money before you are tasked with managing others!"

This was a great opportunity for students to understand the process of budgeting for groceries, especially as inflation rates continue to affect many people at the register. Students were given a $200 budget to plan a tailgate party for 20 people. It had to include 2 appetizers, 2 main options, 2 sides, and a dessert along with plenty of drinks for everyone. They also had to go as far as planning for the serving utensils and some cookware items.

A special thank you goes to Corinth Walmart Supercenter Store Manager Amanda Miller and her great team for allowing our students this opportunity. Several Walmart associates were proud to see our students engaging in such a useful activity. One of them went on to say, "I see plenty of customers everyday that would directly benefit from a class like this."

We are happy to say that all four groups of students completed the project below budget. They all enjoyed their experience and are hopefully more prepared to start the process of money management. Senior Leah Gooch stated, "Today was really fun. I enjoyed class and had several friends jealous when I told them I got to have class at Walmart today."

This is just another example of #LearninginACtion here at Alcorn Central High School!
