Yesterday’s election saw not only the commitment of seasoned poll workers but also the dedication of five remarkable students from our community. Mylee Davis, Amanda Thompson, Jacob Cornelius, Rhett Bivens, and Ian Marion, serving under the leadership of 2nd District Election Commissioner John Peebles, stepped up as student poll workers to gain firsthand experience in civic engagement.
These students were responsible for assisting voters, managing election procedures, and ensuring that the voting process ran smoothly. Throughout the day, they learned valuable lessons about the intricacies of the election system, including voter check-in, ballot handling, and the significance of protecting voter confidentiality.
John Peebles commended the students for their professionalism and eagerness to serve. They showed a true sense of responsibility and interest in our democratic process. “It’s nice to see the next generation take an active role in supporting our community’s right to vote,” Peebles said.
Interacting with voters throughout the day and during the result return process gave Mylee, Amanda, Jacob, Rhett, and Ian a unique perspective on the importance of each vote and a greater understanding of the democratic process. Each of them expressed how much they learned from the experience and how much they valued connecting with community members in this meaningful way.
In a time when civic engagement among youth is more important than ever, these students showed dedication and a commitment to learning about our country’s core values. Their involvement highlights the importance of educational initiatives like student poll worker programs, which empower young people to become active, informed citizens in our democracy.
