Tonight the Alcorn Central Golden Bears will face off against the Thrasher Rebels. Alcorn Central comes into the game with a 1-0 record after defeating the Walnut Wildcats 24-19. Thrasher prepares to play their first game of the season. Thrasher’s game against Middleton last week was cancelled due to Middleton being placed in COVID protocols. Thrasher will be coached by first year Head Coach Ross Coley. Coley comes to Thrasher after spending almost 2 decades as an assistant coach at Warren Central High School in Vicksburg. Alcorn Central leads the all time series 5-3. In the series, Alcorn Central has scored 232 points (29 PPG), and given up 174 points (21.8 PPG). Last season, this game was not played due to the MHSAA moving the season back due to COVID-19.
In 2019, the Bears won a close contest of 20-16. The last time the Bears played the Rebels in Death Valley was in 2018. The Rebels were lead by RB Shawn Dalton Weatherbee and the Rebels won the contest 46-24. In the contest against Walnut last week the Golden Bears offense accounted for 292 yards. 118 yards came from the ground, the other 174 yards came through the air. The Golden Bears were sparked by first year WR/DB Alex Moore. Moore had 3 receptions for 82 yards and 2 touchdowns on the offense. He also accounted for 3 tackles, 3 deflections and 2 interceptions on defense.
I look for the Bears to continue to mix it up on offense. I look for the Golden Bear defense to show up and show out under the direction of Defense Coordinator Forrest Wright. It’s still early to tell, but the Golden Bear defense looks much improved. Last week, the Golden Bears played a pretty clean game for it to be the first game, however they must minimize the penalties and fumbles. Alcorn Central was flagged 6 times for 65 yards. They also fumbled 4 times. Kickoff is set for 7 P.M.
Prediction: Alcorn Central
